The Bowel Disease Foundation wants to guarantee a solid foundation for research and the development of innovative therapies. Germany's leading inflammation specialists, private sponsors and committed companies are determined to meet the challenge Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis pose.
The commitment of the Bowel Disease Foundation complements the activities of the German government and the German Research Foundation, which in 2007 made inflammation research one of the research focuses in Germany.
Promote research today for a healthy future
The Bowel Disease Foundation has been set up in reaction to a phenomenon of modern civilisation: the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract - mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestine. Millions of people are affected, almost exclusively in industrial countries. It is our "civilised" life that makes the body’s defence mechanisms break down after working without fail since human history began. Until 80 years ago, there was no such thing as a chronic gastrointestinal inflammation.
The Bowel Disease Foundation
The Bowel Disease Foundation cooperates closely with two highly successful, publicly funded research networks, the "Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at Interfaces" and the "Competence Network Inflammatory Bowel Disease". In recent years they have
• discovered the first disease genes for intestinal inflammation
• established new, gentle examination methods
• developed highly effective therapies
Now the researchers are working on disease prevention because despite successful research, so far the medical condition of IBD patients can only be ameliorated temporarily. A cure has not been found yet.

Now the researchers are working on disease prevention because despite successful research, so far the medical condition of IBD patients can only be ameliorated temporarily. A cure has not been found yet.
The Bowel Disease Foundation
wants to change that. It has set itself the ambitious goal of finding a way to heal IBD.
A substantial number of grants have been awarded to this aim. They support
• scientists who have developed innovative research projects
• patients who through the severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract have been handicapped in their professional development.

The Bowel Disease Foundation
is managed by Chair Tanja Kühbacher, medical specialist and researcher at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, and the foundation board.
The board of trustees comprises well-known personalities from the world of economics, politics and culture and patient representatives. The board decides on the allocation of grants once a year.
